Growing and Maintenance Tips

For success with clematis dig a large hole and amend it with compost. Bury the new plant  5cms below where it is growing in the pot. Water regularly because clematis do not appreciate dry conditions. A mulch will keep the roots cool and help to retain moisture. Clematis 'Madame Maria' belongs to Pruning Group 2. These cultivars produce early season bloom on the previous season's growth and then late season flowers on new growth. Generally, these cultivars are only pruned to shape. Check individual stems from the top down until you reach a pair of healthy buds, and prune just above them, removing the spindly or damaged growth above. Avoid heavy pruning or flowers will be lost. Also remove any dead or weak stems at this time.
