'James Macfarlane'is a Preston Lilac, one of a group of Lilacs originally developed at the Central Experimental Farm in Ottawa. Preston Lilacs bloom two weeks later than the more common vulgaris lilacs and the blooms are smaller but much denser. Rosy-purple buds open to single pink flowers in large pyramidal clusters. They have a lovely soft fragrance. In our garden this plant is a Swallowtail Butterfly magnet.

Growing and Maintenance Tips
Lilacs are generally very easy care shrubs. Plant them in full sun in moist, well drained soil. Lilacs do not like wet sites especially in the winter. Pruning should be done after spring bloom. Pruning will keep the shrub dense and well shaped and increase the amount of flowers.
