Growing and Maintenance Tips
Serrata amd mactophylla type hydrangeas should be planted in moist well drained soil with the addition of lots of organic material. A mulch to conserve moisture is recommended. They need direct sun but prefer protection from hot mid day sun and can burn in hot dry conditions. Pruning is not necessary and will affect flowering. although dead or damaged branches should be removed in the spring. The "default" colour for big-leaf hydrangeas tends to the pink/red tones, and that is the color they will display in neutral (pH 7.0) or higher soil. The soil must be acidic for the blue color to develop. Aluminum sulfate can be applied in late winter or early spring to acidify the sil if desired.
