Hydrangea 'Pinky Winky' is a workhorse of the summer garden. It is a big easy care shrub with large white panicle blooms that open in mid summer. By late summer the flowers change to pink at the base of the blooms. The flower panicles continue to grow into long cones with more new white florets at the tip. This produces an unusual two tone bloom that can reach almost 40 cms long. The stems are strong and hold the big flowers upright. In the fall the dark green foliage becomes tinged with purple. The blooms can be cut for fresh flowers or for drying or left for winter interest. The standard form of Pinky Winky can take the place of a small tree.
Hydrangea 'Pinky Winky' is an easy care shrub requiring organically rich, well drained soil in full sun to light shade. It becomes lanky in too much shade. It is one of the most hardy of the hydrangeas and thrives in most garden situations. Pruning should be done in late winter because it blooms on new wood.
