Hybrid Hydrangea

'Lets Dance Can Do' has luscious strawberry pink flowers in neutral or alkaline soils, while acidic soils bring out a lovely lavender. This hybrid of hydrangea (H. macrophylla × serrata) is a breakthrough in hydrangea breeding. It is an excellent rebloomer, requiring only a short period of vegetative growth in order to create new wood blooms because it sets its flower buds along the entire length of the stem, not merely at the tips. This means that if this hydrangea is cut back, or damaged by cold temperatures, those lower old wood buds will still develop into flowers. It's a huge leap forward in achieving success with lace cap hydrangeas in zone 4 gardens.

Growing and Maintenance Tips

Serrata amd mactophylla type hydrangeas should be planted in moist well drained soil with the addition of lots of organic material. A mulch to conserve moisture is recommended. They prefer protection from hot mid day sun and can burn in hot dry conditions.  Pruning is not necessary and will affect flowering. although dead or damaged branches should be removed in the spring. The "default" colour for big-leaf hydrangeas tends to the pink/red tones, and that is the color they will display in neutral (pH 7.0) or higher soil. The soil must be acidic for the blue color to develop. Aluminum sulfate can be applied in late winter or early spring to acidify the sil if desired.
