European Meadowsweet is a border perennial with bold, ferny foliage similar to Astilbe. Plants form a bushy clump, bearing sprays of white flowers in early summer. This selection is grown more for the bright yellow foliage, the flowers are sometimes trimmed off to encourage more leaves. It is outstanding in containers, or as an accent.
Filipendula is easily grown in average, medium to wet, well-drained soil in full sun to part shade. It prefers consistently moist, fertile, humusy soils and is intolerant of drought. The foliage will scorch and curl if it is allowed to dry out. Propagate by dividing the clumps in spring. With sufficient moisture the foliage will remain attractive throughout the growing season. If the foliage depreciates in summer, cut back hard to promote new growth.
