Dicentra 'King of Hearts' forms a vigorous clump of powdery grey-green leaves that are topped by small clusters of dangling heart shaped flowers in a bright rose-pink shade. The beautiful dissected foliage provides a contrast to the coarser leaves of hostas and other woodland plants. If deadheaded, the flower display can be extended through mid summer.
Dicentra is a woodland plant that likes rich, organic soil that is moist but well drained. At planting time amend the soil with compost and apply a mulch to conserve moisture. It can be cut back in the late fall or the spring. It can be divided in the fall or early spring but take care because the roots are very brittle.
