Sullivant's Milkweed

Sullivant's Milkweed (Asclepias sullivantii), also known as Prairie Milkweed, is a long-lived perennial and very similar to Common Milkweed. However, Sullivant's Milkweed is less aggressive, has smooth succulent-like leaves and the flowers are typically a uniform pink.  It is one of the best milkweeds for attracting butterflies, especially Monarchs. It is a host plant for their larvae. It is also visited by hummingbirds and a variety of other pollinators, as well.

Growing and Maintenance Tips

Prairie Milkweed makes a nice addition to any sunny medium to medium-moist butterfly garden. After a few years the taproot will extend very deep, protecting the plant in times of drought, but also making it difficult to move so choose your spot carefully.
