Miscanthus 'Giganteus' sometimes known as Siberian Bamboo, towers above any other grasses. This is a grass that needs a big space! It rarely flowers in our zone, but it makes an impressive stand of heavy bamboo like canes. It is excellent for screening or for the back of a border. It slowly spreads to form an impressive clump but is not invasive. This grass is tolerant of a wide range of soil conditions including a moist site. It will grow in light shade but too much shade will make it floppy. If allowed to dry out too much, it will get "bare knees" so it looks best with other perennials planted around it. Over time it may thin out in the center and require planting a piece back into the center to thicken the clump up.
Miscanthus prefers moist but well drained soil in full sun to partial sun. It is adaptable to many soil types including clay and sandy soils. The clump expands slowly by short rhizomes but will retain a tight clumping form. The foliage should be left standing throughout the winter for visual interest and to provide protection for the crown.
