Imperata cylindrica 'Red Baron' is a very dramatic grass that can be challenging to grow in our zone. However, since many people are having success growing it in the Ottawa region, we offer it for those gardeners who like a challenge. The leaves are green at the base with blood red tips. It is best used as a mass planting. It dislikes heavy clay soils as well as soils that dry out so select your site carefully. It will look its best if planted where it is back lit by morning or late afternoon sun.
Grow 'Red Baron' in average well drained soil in sun to partial shade. The foliage colour will be best in full sun. Select a protected site in Zone 4 because it is marginally hardy here. It will spread slowly by underground runners. Cut it to the ground in early spring and divide it in the spring.
