Hakonechloa macra (Hakone Grass) is a very striking perennial grass that forms a cascading mound of gracefully arching, bright, rich-green leaves that ripple in the breeze. In the fall it changes to a beautiful coppery colour. This is more vigourous than the variegated form and makes a larger clump. It is a fabulous choice to add texture to a hosta garden where it is large enough to have an impact when grouped with larger hostas.
Hakone Grass prefers partial shade, like what is found in woodland areas. Full shade will result in lass vigourous growth and sun may scorch leaf tips. It does well when planted in any moist, well-drained soil with a good amount of humus and other organic matter. Dense soils should be amended with compost before planting. Japanese forest grass requires frequent watering and moist soil. This is not a plant for arid conditions.
