Blue, gem-like colour combined with a slow rate of growth makes Picea pungens ‘Zafiro’ suited for gardens with limited space. It has outstanding lush, blue needles but differs in size and habit from other selections with much slower growth and a rounded profile. This compact dwarf tree is an excellent alternative choice to the generic “Dwarf Blue Globe Spruce” commonly specified in suburban landscapes.
Picea pungens do best in a location with a moist, well-drained soil amended with compost. The soil must be well drained. Planting in an area where there is standing water at any time can result in root rot and poor growth. This tree is very drought tolerant and can survive in periods of low water however it does best with moderate water levels. Water deeply and then let the tree soak up the water before adding more.
